Guestpost :: Miss Hannah

I was honored when Carissa asked me to do a guest post about the Bible Bee! I’m excited to share with you about this competition and how it has impacted my life. Thanks so much for the opportunity, Carissa!

Well, first off, what is the Bible Bee? When people ask me this question, I find it hard to sum it up in a few sentences, but I will do my best for you :).  The Bible Bee is a National competition much like the National Spelling Bee but the topic of the Bee is the Bible!  Every year, contestants receive a set amount of verses to memorize (250, 500, or 800 verses depending on what age division he/she is in) and a book of the Bible to study.   At the end of the summer, there is the competition in which contestants are quizzed through a written and a oral test.  Contestants with the top 100 scores in their age category proceed to the National Competition.

Okay, so why am I so pumped about this? Well, the Bible Bee is an amazing competition which can and has changed my life.  But, the competition itself wasn’t what radically impacted me.  It was the topic of the competition; the Bible. I first heard of this competition when it first started in 2009.  I thought that it would be a really cool thing to participate in, so I signed up.  Little did I know how much time and effort it took to study and memorize for the competition.  But, me, wanting to do well, studied really hard.  At that point, my main goals in studying were to do good in the competition and proceed to Nationals.  But as I went on through the summer, I realized that my goals were too shallow.  They didn’t hold enough significance, enough motivation to keep me going.  Then, through all that I was studying, the Lord started showing me that all the motivation to study was right in front of me.  I was studying the Word of GOD!  What a privilege! What a worthwhile thing to study, to spend and pour time into.  Through the Bible Bee competition, I have been given the opportunity to immerse myself in God’s very own Words.  Before I got involved in this competition, I didn’t realize the importance of studying and memorizing the Bible.  This competition taught me that priceless lesson...and I won’t trade it for the world.

We, as Christians, need to be immersing ourselves in the Scriptures.  Why? Because it is the very word of God and, in order to live a life pleasing to our King and Savior, we need to know what He says.   The Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), it is our weapon that we are to use to fight against the wiles of the devil.  We need to know the Scriptures so that we can live a Christ-centered, God-glorifying life.

So, what are some practical tips for memorizing and studying that I have learned? Well, first off, devise a plan; set aside a time to study, pick a passage of Scripture to memorize, make a schedule and set a date to have it memorized by, etc.  If you haven’t done much memory work before, I suggest that you start with small passages.  Don’t over-whelm yourself.  It may seem hard at first, but don’t give up; review, review, review until you feel comfortable with the passage.  Believe me, when I first started memorizing, it was very hard.  I had the hardest time remembering the easiest verses.  But as I kept studying, it became easier.  Keep working, slowly building your pile of memorized verses/passages.  Once you have done it for a little while, I suggest memorizing a larger passage of Scripture such as a whole chapter or even a whole book of the Bible.  Work through it at a comfortable pace - take your time.  It is so neat to memorize large passages of Scripture because then you can see the broader context of the individual verses.

Memorizing and studying Scripture is so important.  And that’s why I love the Bible Bee.  It serves as a great tool and motivation to do just that.   I would encourage any young person to participate in this competition.  For more information visit biblebee.org.

Carissa also ask me to answer the question: Can you please share about yourself? So, here’s a little bit about me.  For starters, my name is Hannah.  I belong to the Lord.  He is my all in all.  Without Him I am nothing.  I am the oldest of eight kids and a pastor’s daughter.  My mom is my teacher (a fancy way of saying that I’m home schooled =)) and she’s very good at her job...when I grow up I want to be just like her.  I am definitely a people person :).  I love talking with my parents, playing with my siblings, and laughing with my friends.  A few of my favorite things are books, recipes to try out, music (especially that of the piano), a fresh summer morning, games to play with my family, sunsets, and hot chocolate on a cold winter day.  I also enjoy drama, running, researching fun topics, knitting/crocheting, and most importantly, spending time with my King and closest Friend; Jesus Christ. You can find me occasionally writing over at accountabilityforum.blogspot.com. So, that’s me in a nutshell. It’s a pleasure to meet you :).

Tips for Memorization

~Photo courtesy of Microsoft Office Clip art~

We are told to hide God's word in our heart. Kind David said, "Your word I have hidden in mine heart that I might not sin against you." Sometimes it is hard to know what is the best method of memorization. Below are some tips on memorization that I have found helpful -

*Before you start the actually memorizing the passage you have picked out I find it helpful to read the passage several times to understand what it is saying.

*After reading it several times I like to write it out a couple times.

*Now I start memorizing the passage by working on it phrase by phrase.

*If you are planning to memorize a chapter or even book of the Bible and plan to do it over several months I have found it helpful just to read the chapter or book, out loud, three times a day.

*Reading the passage out loud right before you go to sleep really helps, and just listening to the passage read while you are laying in bed is also really helpful.

*After you have memorized a passage make sure it review it very often. If you do not you will soon lose it (That has happened to me several times). I have found an free, online site that is really helpful. It is called Memverse.

May you strive to hide God's Word in your heart!

Check back next Saturday for the giveaway that I will be holding related to Memorization!

2011 National Bible Bee

They had these posters all over the place. I really enjoyed reading the scripture and looking at them. The person who did them is really good at calligraphy.

Guess What!

Today is a special day for a very special person.  Can you guess?

It's Carissa's Birthday!!!

This morning, I'm thankful for the thirteen years that I've been able to spend with Carissa.

~Several things I'm thankful for about Carissa, listed in no particular order~
  • Every Wednesday night, she stays up late just to see us when we get home from Bible study.
  • She is very diligent in memorizing her Bible Bee verses.
  • She doesn't get easily discouraged or upset when she makes a mistake while reviewing her verses with me--just determines to try harder and keeps going.
  • She has a big, wonderful smile.
  • She often spends time playing with her younger brother and sisters (yes, as evidenced by both the photos!).
  • She spends time talking with her older sisters and we have lots of fun together.
Happy Birthday, Carissa!
I hope you have a special day and a fantastically wonderful year!  Enjoy being thirteen =)
Love,
Amy

My Ramblings...

Hi All. This post is going to be somewhat random. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I will start working on all of those. Also, I have grown tired of my old look on my blog. I will be working on it over the next couple days. If you have any ideas for my blog please comment and tell me.

Bible Cake

Recently I found this recipe for a Bible Cake. I thought I would share it with you all. Look up the references. Enjoy

3/4 cup Genesis 18:8
1 1/2 cup Jeremiah 6:20
5 Isaiah 10:14 (separated)
3 cups sifted Leviticus 24:5
3 teaspoons 2 Kings 2:20
3 teaspoons Amos 4:5
1 teaspoon Exodus 3:23
1/4 teaspoon each 2 Chronicles 9:9
1/2 cup Judges 4:19
3/4 chopped Genesis 43:11
3/4 cup finely cut Jeremiah 24:5
3/4 cup 2 Samuel 16:1
Whole Genesis 43:11

Cream Genesis 18 with Jeremiah 6. Beat in yolks of Isaiah 10, one at a time. Sift together Leviticus 24; 2 Kings 2; Amos 4; Exodus 30; and 2 Chronicles 9.
Blend into creamed mixture alternately with Judges 4. Beat whites of Isaiah 10 till stiff; fold in. Fold in chopped Genesis 43; Jeremiah 24; and 2 Samuel 16. Turn into 10-inch tube pan that has been greased and dusted with Leviticus 24.
Bake at 325 degrees F until it is golden brown or Gabriel blows his trumpet, whichever happens first. Bake for an hour and ten minutes. Remove from oven. After fifteen minutes, remove it from the pan. Cool completely. Drizzle over it some Burnt Jeremiah Syrup.

Bible Bee Verses

I thought I would share some of my Bible Bee verses with you. Here you go:

Psalm 141:3 - Set a guard o LORD over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips.

Proverbs 22:17 - Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise and apply your heart to my knowledge.

John 4:25-26  - The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ), When he comes he  will tell us all things. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he.

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our LORD.

Memverse

I wanted to let you all know, my readers, that I have found a very helpful site for Memory work. It is called Memverse. You sign up and then put in your verses you want to memorize. Your interval between reviewing verses gets bigger and bigger as you review it more.

Bible Bee

I have decided that its time for an update on the Bible Bee. It is six weeks and three days until the local competition! I am almost finished with my memory work. Lord willing, I should be finished by July 24th. The Bible Bee is such an encouragement to me mainly because I am memorizing God's Word and I am digging deeper into His Word.

A Prayer Request

Please pray for me that I would not set my mind on winning the Bible Bee but that I would stay focused on doing my best and giving God the glory. What can I be praying for you about (don't put on anything you don't want on the Internet, or if you want to tell me but not have it on the Internet put NNTP [No Need To Publish])?

But if I am to post I have to have something to post about, right? :) I'm kind of having a hard time figuring what to post about. Does anyone have any ideas? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The Perfect Summer - A Story

Hi, my name is Jennifer Ross. I am eleven years old and am part of the most amazing family ever. There is Daddy, Mommy, Jonathan, Jessie, and Jeremiah. Mommy said I am to write about the best summer ever. Many people think that the best summer ever is going to the park and having a picnic, drinking cold lemonade, biting into juicy watermelon, reading good books and doing absolutely nothing. I have to disagree with them. That may be their idea of the perfect summer but that is not mine. Here is my idea of a perfect summer.
“Hurray, school is out,” I shouted. Mother looked up from the book she was reading. “You’re all done?! Very good, I didn’t think you would be done until the end of the month.” She smiled at me and then turned back to her book. Just then my brothers and sister and Daddy walked in. Daddy was rubbing his hands and his eyes sparkled. He would rub his hands and his eyes would sparkle whenever he had an idea. He turned to me, “So, Jennifer, you are all done with school. That is just wonderful because I know what you are going to do for the summer.” In our family Daddy always decides what we will do during the summer. We might go somewhere, do a project together, camp out or whatever else he decides. “Jennifer, you will be making food for the next door neighbor. You will be mowing the lawn to. Your brothers and sister will help you. If you do this faithfully, diligently and correctly you will be awarded a week before school starts again.” I was quite surprised when I heard this but decided that I would rather enjoy it. I like mowing lawns, cooking, and I was quite ready to help the neighbor. Our neighbor was in her 70’s. She was a very sweet lady and when we moved in about three years ago she made us a big meal.
The next day I awoke and got ready for the day. I then sat at my desk and wrote out what things I could do to help her. My list included: making meals, making just small things like muffins, cookies, etc, mowing the lawn, tending the gardens, feeding the animals, filling the bird feeder with feed and making sure the bird bath was full of water. As I looked over my list I surprised myself with saying, “This is going to be fun.” I did think it would be fun. I enjoyed helping other people. I liked cooking, mowing, keeping the yard tidy, taking care of the animals and filling the bird feeder and bath. As we had breakfast I went over my plan with Mommy. I would clean the breakfast kitchen and then make a meal which would include a croissant sandwich, a bowl of fruit, and some cookies. I would then mow the lawn, clean the house feed the animals and tidy up the yard.
Breakfast cleanup was over, the meal was made and I was heading over to our neighbor’s house. I nervously knocked on the door and waited for her to answer. The door was pulled open and our neighbor, Rose, stepped out.
“Hello there, Jennifer,” She said. “Hello Mrs. Johnson. I made you this meal. Also this summer I am going to be making you meals, taking care of the yard, animals, cleaning the house and doing anything you want done.” I answered. “That’s so sweet of you. Thank you so much, honey,” she replied. “I am going to start with mowing the lawn,” I said. “Thank you so much.” She took the meal from me and then went inside.
This went on all summer long. A week before I was to start school Daddy called us all into the family room. “You did a wonderful job, Jennifer. You could continue through the fall and winter. Now, I said that I would give you a prize at the end. You have definitely earned that prize. It is,” he paused and waited for us to grow impatient, “it is a week to Florida! I am taking my vacation time now. You will be able to swim with dolphins. We will be staying right next to the beach.”
We headed down to Florida and had an amazing week which consisted of swimming with dolphins, seeing white beaches, being with my family and just enjoying the warm weather of Florida. With the week vaction over we headed back to our home - the state of Iowa.
That is my idea of the perfect summer. You might be saying: “How could you think that is the perfect summer?” My answer is: “What could be a more perfect way then serving others? The Bible commands that we serve others. Also serving others is more important in light of eternity then spending our time on ourselves. Why waste our time in this life when we can be using our time to glorify our KING?” Serving others is a better way to spend your summer than all on yourself. That is the perfect summer

When I Survey the Wonderous Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died;
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Great is the Lord

Recently David and I have been studying forces of the earth in Science. It has been really interesting to learn about different things such as earthquakes, volcanoes, etc... Reading about the forces of the earth has showed me more and more about how great the Lord is. A volcano erupting is really big to us but to him it is a tiny thing. Earthquakes can change things in minutes for us but that is nothing to God. Below are some verses that talk about how great God is.

1 Chronicles 16:25 ~ For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, he is to be held in awe above all gods.

Psalm 48:1 ~ Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised In the city of our God!

Psalm 96:4 ~ For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.

Psalm 145:3 ~ Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

In the Bible it tells us over and over how great the Lord is. We should praise Him because of His greatness. While studying the forces of the earth I have seen that I need to be praising him more then I am. Have you been praising him for his greatness? If not I encourage you to. One thing I have found helpful is to go outside and praise God for what He has done in my life, thanking Him for His goodness and for all the things He has made.
