The Godly Man's Picture :: Some Quotes

The other day I started reading "The Godly Man's Picture" by Thomas Watson. It is one of the Puritan Paperbacks and a wonderful book. Here's a few quotes from this great book:

"When the Lord pardons a sinner, He does not pay a debt, but gives a legacy."
"A man has no more power to change himself than to create himself."
"He who has only a painted heaven shall have only a painted happiness."
"Many take Christ as Jesus, but refuse Him as Lord."

And, on a side note, Happy 1st day of October!!!

The head of a company survived 9/11
because his son started kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive because it was
his turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her
alarm clock didn't go off in time...

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike
because of an auto accident.

One of them
missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take
time to change.

car wouldn't start.

One couldn't
get a taxi.

One man put on a new pair of shoes that morning and took the various means to get to work, but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot.
He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid.
That's why he's alive today...

Now when I am
Stuck in traffic,
Miss an elevator,
Turn back to answer a ringing telephone...
All the little things that annoy me.
I think to myself,
this is exactly where God wants me to be
at this very moment...

Next time your morning seems to be going wrong,
You can't seem to find the car keys,
You hit every traffic light,
Don't get mad or frustrated;
It may just be that
God is watching over you.
May God continue to bless you
With all those annoying little things
And may you remember their possible purpose.

It's hard to believe that locals is all over! It sped by so fast!! We all had a great was SO much fun!

Early in the morning we got up and prepared for our big day...we made sure that we had everything, grabbed a quick bite to eat and then headed out. We went through the registration line and registered then we headed into the sanctuary to wait for the opening ceremony. After instructions, a song, and prayer the juniors and seniors headed downstairs to take the written test, while the primaries went for their oral rounds. After finishing the written test all the juniors and seniors headed back up for their oral rounds. After all tests were completed everyone headed back downstairs for lunch. We had a great time fellowshipping with others! With lunch finished we all went back to the sanctuary where each family went up on stage and shared a little bit about their Bible Bee experience. When each family had shared the top five finalists in each division were announced. Our host announced the primaries first and we were greatly delighted to hear "3rd place in the primary division...Ellia"!!!!!!! Ellia did very well considering that she had just recently learned to read and having to take the written test! Then the juniors were announced and the 1st place winner was....David!!!!!! Then the Seniors were announced! She announced 5th place and then 4th place and then 3rd place as Bethany!!!!!! Then they announced 2nd place and then "And 1st place in the senior division...Carissa"!! I was in total shock! ALL GLORY TO GOD!!!

We had a very wonderful and special day! Scores are posted on Wednesday and I can't wait!!!!!

Sorry I don't have any pictures...contestants weren't allowed cameras :)

On August 6, 1988 two people were joined together in parents. They have now been married 25 years!!

On August 8 we had a surprise party to honor them on their 25 years of marriage! It was a very special evening to think back over my parents marriage. They are a wonderful example of Christian marriage!!

A Thought Provoking Quote

"You say, 'If I had a little more, I should be very satisfied.' You make a mistake. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled." ~ Charles Spurgeon

"We can always find something to be thankful for." ~ Albert Barnes

Each day contains many blessings. But so often I just pass over them. The Bible tells us to "come into his gates with praise and his courts with thanksgiving."

I am thankful for:
*Reading the word with different ladies at the nursing home today
*Having lunch with a dear lady in our church
*Being able to participate in the National Bible Bee
*Our Air Conditioner :)
*Beautiful flowers
*Our vegetable garden
*For my wonderful family and sweet friends
*Pretty music to play on the piano

What are you thankful for today?

(I'm sorry I've been absent for so long. I'm going to start blogging more often :D)

Book Review : : The Triumph of John and Betty Stam

The Triumph of John and Betty Stam was a very challenging, moving and encouraging book. John and Betty Stam were missionaries to China during the time of the Chinese Civil War while Communists were in control. Betty went over to China in 1931 and two years later in 1933 John also went over to China. They were married on October 25, 1933 and on September 11, 1934 their little daughter was born, Helen Priscilla Stam. On December 8, 1934 while still both in their late 20's they were both executed by the communists. Miraculously their little daughter Helen was rescued by a Chinese Pastor.

This is such a wonderful book. It shows why Betty and John went over to China. It tells about their life beforehand and how they were able to face everything.

One lady, when she heard of of the execution, said, "Oh, why did they go there?" Mr. Stam answered, "Because the Love of Christ constrained them. We were glad to see them go and would gladly have let them go again, because we look not at the things that are seen. They were not after money or comfort but after souls."

John and Betty Stam knew that this life is not about comfort and happiness for the flesh but that they needed to serve the Lord. They knew that their life was not their own. There is a cost to following Christ and they knew that. Because of their supreme sacrifice God used it to inspire others to follow Him in the same way. When the world heard of the execution they said "What a waste." But was it really a waste? God does not waste his people. He uses us for his glory and he used the Stam's for his glory. It is not a waste to use our life for our glory and the Stam's sacrifice was not a waste.

Below is a poem written by Betty at the age of 18:
Lord, I give up all my own plans and purposes,
All my own desires and hopes,
And accept Thy will for my life.
I give myself, my life, my all
Utterly to Thee to be Thine forever.
Fill me and seal me with Thy Holy Spirit.
Use me as Thou wilt, send me where Thou wilt.
And work out Thy whole will in my life, at any cost,
Now and forever.

John included this poem in a letter to his father. Though he did not write the poem it still expresses his thoughts:

Afraid?  Of what?
To feel the spirit’s glad release?
To pass from pain to perfect peace,
The strife and strain of life to cease?
Afraid—of that?
Afraid?  Of what?
Afraid to see the Savior’s face,
To hear His welcome, and to trace
The glory gleam from wounds of grace?
Afraid—of that?
Afraid?  Of what?
A flash—a crash—a pierced heart;
Darkness—Light—O Heaven’s art?
A wound of His a counterpart!
Afraid?—of that?
Afraid?  Of what?
To do by death what life could not—
Baptize with blood a stony plot,
Till souls shall blossom from the spot?
Afraid?—of that?

Below are some quotes of John and Betty Stam's:

“I think, sometimes, we excuse ourselves when we fail, because we realize that the flesh is weak. If we could really see sin as God sees it, what a fight would be put up!” ~ John Stam ~

"It’s as clear as daylight to me that the only worthwhile life is one of unconditional surrender to God’s will, and of living in His way, trusting His love and guidance.” ~ Betty Scott Stam ~

“When we consecrate ourselves to God, we think we are making a great sacrifice, and doing lots for Him, when really we are only letting go some little, bitsie trinkets we have been grabbing and when our hands are empty, He fills them full of His treasures.” ~Betty Scott Stam~

“We do not know where they (the soldiers) are going, but we are going to Heaven.” ~ John Stam ~
This book was very moving and it brought tears to my eyes but it was also eye opening. I would highly recommend this book.

Update on Bethany #1

Bethany had a rough night. She can't keep her liquid medicine down and when she drinks anything she gets an upset stomach. Nausea is being a big problem right now.  She will not be allowed to come home until she can keep her liquid medicine down. This is very troubling to Bethany so please continue praying.
